As Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Minuteman Security & Life Safety, Jay Slaughterbeck brings over two decades of expertise in commercial security, IP networking, and strategic leadership. Formerly the CEO of Strategic Security Solutions (S3), which was acquired by Minuteman in September 2023, Slaughterbeck has transitioned into a role where he can drive innovation at scale.
In this exclusive interview with SVIP, we explore his insights on industry trends, Minuteman’s growth strategy, and the future of security technology.
From CEO to CTO: A Strategic Shift
Q: After leading S3 as CEO for over 20 years, how has your transition to CTO at Minuteman been? What motivated this career progression?
"At S3, my strength was always understanding clients' strategic initiatives and finding out-of-the-box solutions to meet their needs. Now, I can leverage that expertise at a higher level, making a broader impact—which is incredibly motivating. This role allows me to be a true needle-mover for Minuteman."*
Slaughterbeck’s shift from CEO to CTO reflects his passion for technology-driven security solutions. Rather than stepping back, he sees this as an opportunity to shape Minuteman’s technological future while maintaining a customer-centric approach.
The S3 Acquisition & Integration Success
Q: How has the integration process been since Minuteman acquired S3, and what synergies have emerged?
Slaughterbeck highlights the importance of meticulous integration, ensuring minimal disruption while unlocking new capabilities. The acquisition has expanded Minuteman’s reach, allowing them to deliver enterprise-level security solutions more effectively.
"Integration is the 'secret sauce' for success in mergers. Merging systems, policies, procedures, and culture requires extreme care. Our IT team’s deep knowledge of our ERP, HR’s mindful transition planning, and Ops’ ability to leverage talent across the board have been critical. Synergies? We now self-execute at a much larger scale while maintaining high performance."
The Most Impactful Security Tech Advancements
Q: With your deep background in IP networking and security, what recent technological advancements do you find most impactful?
"Beyond buzzwords like 'cloud' and 'AI,' manufacturers are finally prioritizing cyber hygiene. Take Mercury’s MP series hardware with TLS 1.3—security is evolving. Outbound-only device configurations reduce risk, and we’re seeing more manufacturers adopt cloud/SaaS models, especially for enterprise deployments."
AI & Machine Learning in Security
Q: How is Minuteman incorporating AI and machine learning into its solutions?
"We’re cautious with bleeding-edge tech but leverage AI where it adds real value—facial recognition, forensic searches, LPR, and system health monitoring. The key is exceeding customer expectations without overpromising. I’m excited about AI bridging gaps in system efficiency and response times."
Rather than chasing trends, Minuteman focuses on practical AI applications that enhance security without compromising reliability.
Expansion & Growth Strategy
Q: Minuteman now operates across 20+ offices. What’s driving this expansion, and how do you sustain momentum?
Slaughterbeck underscores that growth isn’t just about scale—it’s about maintaining performance and cultural alignment.
"We’re focused on making 1+1=3—expanding smartly with partners who align with our vision and culture. Our M&A strategy may look aggressive, but our organic growth is equally strong. We set high internal goals and expect big results."
The Future of Security: Cyber-Physical Convergence
Q: How is Minuteman addressing the convergence of physical security and cybersecurity?
"Proper cyber hygiene—TLS, AES, OSDP—is table stakes. Our technical services team takes hardening further when needed. Cyber is a team sport, and we play our part."
Leadership Philosophy: Servant Leadership & Focus
Q: How would you describe your leadership approach?
"I believe in joint leadership—our team tackles obstacles fast and stays focused on the future. Personally, I’m about doing what’s right (like mandating OSDP v2) and delivering on promises. I subscribe to Servant Leadership—I won’t ask my team to do anything I wouldn’t do myself."
The Next 5 Years in Security
Q: What’s next for Minuteman and the security industry?
"Cyber hygiene and evolving tech will remain key. The industry has been slow to change, but the next five years will see massive shifts. True integrators—not just installers—will differentiate by solving complex security challenges through deep expertise."
Slaughterbeck predicts a future where security integrators must prove their value as technology becomes more accessible. Minuteman is positioning itself as a leader in this new era.
Final Thoughts
Jay Slaughterbeck’s transition from CEO to CTO marks a strategic evolution—one where his expertise in security technology and customer-centric innovation will drive Minuteman forward. With a focus on cybersecurity, AI, and disciplined growth, Minuteman is poised to redefine the security integration landscape.
Under his leadership, the company isn’t just keeping pace with industry changes—it’s shaping them.
