The world of surveillance and security is rapidly evolving, driven by advancements in AI, real-time analytics, and large-scale integrated systems. Few understand this transformation better than Eddy Collier, Executive Director of Surveillance Technology at MGM Resorts International, who has spent his career at the forefront of innovation in the field.
In this exclusive interview with SVIP, Collier shares insights into his career journey, the challenges of overseeing surveillance across a global hospitality empire, and how MGM Resorts is leveraging cutting-edge technology to stay ahead of threats while enhancing guest safety.
From Analog to Digital: A Career Built on Innovation
Q: Can you share your career path and how it led to your current role as Executive Director of Surveillance Technology at MGM Resorts?
"My career began with an opportunity to assist on a major CCTV project in Clovis, CA. The project was a success, and I was soon offered a full-time position in El Segundo, CA. This was the start of my journey in the CCTV industry, an industry rapidly transitioning from analog cameras and VCRs to the exciting world of digital technology. I was eager to learn, innovate, and contribute to the evolution of these systems."
Collier’s early career included installing security systems at high-profile locations such as LAX Airport, the San Pedro Bridge, and Terminal Island Federal Correctional Prison. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch his own CCTV company before moving to Las Vegas at just 21 to work as a surveillance technician at The Mirage.
"I didn’t see this as just a job, I saw a career path filled with opportunity, innovation, and limitless potential in a city that thrives on technology” Eddy shares.
A defining moment came when Collier played a key role in CityCenter (now Aria), MGM’s most ambitious and expensive project at the time. He proactively sought leadership involvement, helping design and manage the surveillance infrastructure—an experience that set the stage for his future corporate role. Recognizing the need for structure in the traditionally siloed surveillance industry, Collier helped pioneer “Corporate Surveillance”, a first-of-its-kind initiative to unify MGM’s properties under a cohesive strategy.
"Today, in my role as Executive Director, I lead our technical teams at the corporate level, setting technology roadmaps, key performance indicators, and transformation strategies that distinguish us from the competition. My guiding principle has always been: Never settle for what has been done. Always push boundaries, test limits, and drive innovation forward."
Overseeing Surveillance at Scale
Q: What are your key responsibilities in overseeing surveillance operations across MGM Resorts properties?
"My key responsibilities include leading the strategic development and implementation of surveillance technology across MGM Resorts properties, both domestically and internationally. I oversee the standardization of surveillance systems, ensuring seamless integration and security across all locations." Collier’s role extends beyond maintenance—he drives innovation, manages system upgrades, and ensures operational efficiency while aligning with global security standards.
Q: How do you ensure seamless surveillance across all properties?
"Ensuring seamless surveillance across MGM Resort's global portfolio requires a combination of standardized technology, strategic leadership, and a highly skilled technical team." He emphasizes the importance of “AI-driven analytics, cloud-based video management, and cybersecurity measures” to maintain a secure yet scalable framework.
Balancing Security and Guest Experience
Q: How do you strike the right balance between robust security and an enjoyable guest experience?
"We balance security and guest experience by deploying best-in-class technologies that enable real-time threat detection without disruption. AI-driven analytics, advanced video management, and intelligent monitoring allow our surveillance teams to proactively identify risks while maintaining a seamless, welcoming environment." Discretion is key—security responses are swift but unobtrusive, ensuring guests feel safe without intrusion.
The Future of Surveillance: AI, LiDAR, and Beyond
Q: What trends in surveillance are you most excited about?
"The future of surveillance is being transformed by LiDAR technology, which will allow us to track all moving objects in real time and analyze patterns over any given period. This, combined with AI-driven behavioral analysis, mobile surveillance units, and advanced access control, will enhance proactive threat detection." Collier also highlights the growing role of “virtual gate guards, remote monitoring, and deep VMS (Video Management System) integrations” as game-changers in security operations.
Q: Where do you see surveillance evolving in the next decade?
"Surveillance will always play a critical role in hospitality and gaming. No AI will ever replace the human element, but it will continue to enhance our ability to react faster and more efficiently." He predicts greater AI customization, real-time adaptability, and deeper behavioral analytics will shape the next generation of security solutions.
Leadership Lessons and Advice for Aspiring Professionals
Q: What principles guide your leadership style?
"My leadership is built on clear communication, shared vision, and accountability. I believe in open dialogue, aligning teams with our goals, and ensuring everyone understands the bigger picture." Rather than micromanaging, Collier empowers his teams to take ownership, fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and proactive problem-solving.
Q: What advice would you give to those aspiring to lead in surveillance and security?
"Stay proactive, embrace technology, and prioritize collaboration. The industry is evolving rapidly, so continuous learning is key. Don’t just follow industry standards—push boundaries, innovate, and drive change to stay ahead of emerging threats."
Conclusion: A Visionary Approach to Security
Eddy Collier’s journey—from a CCTV technician to a corporate leader shaping the future of surveillance—demonstrates the power of innovation, initiative, and strategic thinking. Under his leadership, MGM Resorts continues to set the standard for integrated, intelligent security systems that protect guests while enhancing operational efficiency. As threats evolve, so does technology—and Collier’s forward-thinking approach ensures MGM remains at the cutting edge, proving that the best security is not just reactive, but predictive.
For those looking to enter the field, Eddy’s advice is clear: “Adapt, innovate, and never stop pushing forward”.
